Best Time to Plant: Autumn or spring, when the soil is workable and moist.
Location: Prefers a partially shaded area, protected from strong winds.
Soil Requirements: Rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Slightly acidic soil enhances the intensity of the red blooms.
Spacing: Allow 1.2–1.5m between plants for healthy growth and air circulation.
Planting Steps:
Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball.
Mix in compost or organic matter for added nutrients.
Place the plant level with the soil surface and backfill firmly.
Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to conserve moisture.
Watering: Hydrangeas need consistent moisture. Water deeply during dry spells, particularly in summer.
Feeding: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and a potassium-rich feed in mid-summer to boost flower colour.
Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring, removing old flower heads and weak stems. Avoid cutting new shoots that will bear flowers.
Mulching: Add a layer of organic mulch each spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Winter Care: Hardy in Ireland, but young plants benefit from mulch protection against frost.
Pollinator-Friendly: Hydrangea ‘Red Baron’ attracts bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, providing valuable nectar during the summer.
Habitat Value: Its dense foliage creates shelter for birds and beneficial insects in the garden.
Eco-Benefit: Hydrangeas improve garden biodiversity, supporting pollinator pathways in both urban and rural Irish landscapes.
